Home Pride Productions Review of Copies & Eleven.
Back home in Chicago after an extensive tour of Europe, Ether Frolics recently sent Home Pride a copy of their critically acclaimed 1998 CD release, "40K." Having loved Michael Caine's Oscar winning performance as (ether addict, abortionist, orphanage director, saint) Dr. Wilbur Larch in John Irving's The Cider House Rules, I was immediately turned on. Their name is a perfect fit for their beautiful, druggy music. "Copies" was inspired by daydreaming while doing monotonous office work, but there are many deeper layers of meaning, including environmental issues, the artist's urge to preserve his work for posterity, and also of our producing children to continue family lines. The recording also features a haunting vocal melody and elegant piano fills. With it's gracefully shifting time signatures and exquisite trombone solo, the instrumental "Eleven" is great driving music, reminiscent of (the group) Chicago. |
Home Pride Productions Review of "True" (mp3 unavailable).
This new unreleased single from our friends Ether Frolics covers all the band's trademarks: Stephen Fransen's plaintive vocals, James Warden's flowing guitar lines, and especially the dreamy-fluid rhythms laid down by the band. "Waiting...hoping...patient..." the song exhibits an innoncence and energy akin to the spirit of Buddy Holly. |
Home Pride Productions Review of "Save the Earth Fest 2000 performance.
It is obvious how the Frolics have gelled as a band after a couple of years of steady touring. Their quirky Double Door performance satisfyingly displayed all of their trademarks... the distinctively emotive voice of Steve Fransen singing his poignant lyrics (and you could hear every word)... James Warden emptying his trick bag of rich and muscular guitar tones... the enthusiastic (and somewhat unusual) performing style of Brian Welsh... not to mention their great, moody songs. Ether Frolics had so much to offer that they won over a lot of new fans. Highlights included "Mesmerized" and the awesome "Copies" enhanced by Matt Mayes' martial percussion absent from the recorded version.

~Unfortunaley, HomePride is no longer with us. Here's to hoping they get something else going! |
